Councilor Russell will not seek re-election in 2025 in District 3

For the 1st time since 2011, George Russell's name will not be listed as a candidate for District 3 City Councilor this coming November. Russell, in a prepared statement said "it's time for new leaders to step up and bring their vision to the voters of our District 3."

"If you do the job right, it's a big time commitment, but very rewarding when you know you helped a resident or

a small business person cut through the red tape and solve their personal or neighborhood issue." Russell plans to continue to serve as D3 Councilor until his term expires at the end of 2025. He looks forward to continuing to address various City Government issues that will be at the forefront in the year ahead. He has not missed a role call for more than 10 years.

At the end of his term, Russell will have served 14 years as District 3 Councilor. The only other person to have filled that office was Paul Clancy, who served for 24 years. Russell was reelected in 2023 with over 75% of votes cast.

The Councilor has a long list of accomplishments that include bringing attention to conditions at Worcester East Middle School's facility. This led to multimillion dollar planned improvements funded by State, Federal and local funds. The school will see construction this summer with the installation of new windows and ventilation improvements. He has also advocated for the redesign of Roosevelt School parking lot, which will also begin soon, with well over $1.4 million in Federal ARPA funds from the City Administration.

Russell, who has been Chairman of the Public Works Committee for more than 8 years, was the lead sponsor of the Council Order that created the 311 smartphone app to coordinate City response to resident complaints. He also succeeded in major artery improvements and Park upgrades throughout D3.

The Councilor was also chief sponsor of CC items that led to the creation of..

-A TIF Policy setting goals for local jobs for local residents.

-The Outdoor Dining Ordinance that allows restaurants to have outdoor dining year-round weather permitting.

-The ADU Ordinance that allows in-law apartments.

-A Home Rule State Law change that makes it easier for some elderly residents to facilitate private road conversion financing.

What's next for Russell? "We will see what the future brings, but my commitment to the city doesn't stop today. I will continue to contribute to making Worcester a better place to live and work." Russell continues to be a Realtor and owner of George Russell Realty LLC on Grafton Street in Worcester.                                                                                     January 15, 2025
